PlayLab Inc creates "surreal" pyramidal skate ramp for Vans

www.dezeen.com: Californian design studio PlayLab Inc has constructed a massive skateable pyramid in Downtown Los Angeles in collaboration with footwear brand Vans. The bright-yellow skate ramp was placed between two buildings in an industrial district near the LA River as part of the city's art week – centred around the Frieze, Felix and Spring/Break art fairs.

This looks incredibly fun to skate on. Hopefully the community in that area actually wants it there, and it becomes something for skaters to cross off their todo list. I really like that there's more surreal public art than there was just a few years ago. Things like meow wolf's supermarket is just incredible and I think really brings a lot of people together as a community, as well as being just a really innovative performance space. I really like when performance spaces arise out of, installations, where simply being there is inherently an active performance. I also think that companies should invest more into the communities which they base, and create installations, parks, other social public goods that people will actually use. I think that people should give back to the space that they inhabit, and give to the communities they have taken from. all that being said, I might need to book a plane ticket, and learn how to skateboard better.

This skate ramp looks so cool! I genuinely will love to skate on that. Do I know how to skate? Absolutely not, but it looks so fun! I think that skate ramps and skate parks are really cool, and are often kind of lackluster. This is only because they don't take control of the full potential they have. I think transforming them from just concrete slabs and arches, into tasteful art, or just fun designs would be so cool. things like neon colors or Galaxy themes or other things like that sound really cool. This giant skate ramp looks really cool. The solid color of that bright orange makes a really cool effect. also showing the shadow of the skater in the pictures is insane. I feel like skating on this ramp would almost feel like going across sand dunes. And speaking of sand dunes Dune 2 is coming out soon! and by coming out soon I mean it's already out, I need to watch the first one but sounds like it might be a good watch!

This bright orange pyramid seems very LA so it is no shock to me that that is where this sculpture was built. With so many sculptures having the words “No Skateboarding” in bold on a plaque beside it it is refreshing to see a piece of public art which has the purpose to be skated on. I do not know much about PlayLab as a company but from what I gathered reading this article it is some sort of interior design/public art company. This company pairing with Vans was a good idea both for expertise in the skateboarding world and the popularity and marketing power Vans as a brand carries. This article raised 2 questions for me, the first being how skatable is this ramp in practice. The orange pyramid looks distinctive but not incredibly skatable or safe to skate on. The second question this article brings up for me is how durable and long lasting is this sculpture. In a year will it continue to be a practical art piece or become another piece of urban waste.
