How IATSE’s New Marvel VFX Union Wants to Reshape the Industry

IndieWire: Mark Patch, a veteran visual effects coordinator (“Tenet”), joined IATSE last fall as a full-time organizer for visual effects workers. However, dating back to his earliest work as a PA, Patch asked his colleagues questions as to why VFX workers didn’t have a union like almost everyone else on the call sheet. He got answers, but never believed them.

I am really happy that IATSE has been able to make this new union for VFX employees. I never really had any insight into this side of the industry before, and learning about past issues with VFX artists and designers such as with Life of Pi was very shocking for me, but made a lot of sense in retrospect. It is very disappointing and sad that the industry continues to over work and use these workers then throws them away after with no job security and unfair compensation for their overtime. This is why unions and organizations like IATSE is so important. This article was especially interesting because I had just watched Spiderman- Into the Multiverse last night for the first time. The visual effects were probably the best I've ever seen. And on top of that, there was so much thought and care into the artistic meaning and balance to each frame and what the VFX represented given the dimension we were in. I hope that this union will continue to help job security and that Marvel will take it with respect and grace.
