Understudy Mikayla Renfrow Got the Call to Go On At Aladdin. While She Was on a Plane

Playbill: Mikayla Renfrow had just finished up a week-long European vacation and was set to return Tuesday to her ensemble track in Disney's Aladdin on Broadway. But, as sometimes happens, her flight was delayed. Stage management understood. They've been there before. They would put another actor in Renfrow's track for the evening and see her on stage the next day.

I have full respect for Mikayla Renfrow, and everyone else who was involved in the path to get her onstage on time. As mentioned, delays happen all the time, but this delay was very crucial, as they Mikayla Renfrow needed to get onstage almost right after she landed in New York, and 30 mins would be such a time crunch to get ready, but she still made it in time, and really admire her and the cast’s and crew’s effort to make this happen. With understudies, its really hard to know when you’re going to be called onstage, and you just always have to be ready. In this case, even if Mikayla Renfrow wasn’t ready, she just had to be ready, as she was the only understudy that was going to be available, to my surprise. Having to do the main role of Aladdin after a weeklong vacation would be very difficult, and it reminds me of when my school had rehearsals for a show, then we’d go on break, then everyone would come back very rusty, and would’ve forgotten most of the material.
