The first thing I found interesting about this article was the fact that the festival was happening at the sight of an old steel mill. Both Pittsburgh and Baltimore where I grew up are old steel cities but I have never thought about using the steel mill as a backdrop for a concert.
The biggest challenge of this festival project sounds like the coordination of all of the equipment. The article noted that they used 20 different rental companies spread out among several different companies. The logistics of coordinating, moving, and installing all of that gear must have been intense. It also would have taken an incredible amount of work to coordinate the hundreds of techs they hired.
With so much complexity going on I think it makes sense to use multiple lights from the same brand in order to make things work as easily as possible. One of the great benefits of doing it this way is being able to use technology like Robe’s robospot system in order to use the moving lights as follow spots.
