IATSE Issues Statement Condemning Possible U.S. Federal Government Shutdown
IATSE: As our country stands by under the threat of a disastrous government shutdown, I speak on behalf of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees in calling on Congress, and specifically Speaker McCarthy, to pass either a full-year funding package or clean, short-term measure to ensure the uninterrupted operation of our government.

I think that it is absolutely amazing that IATSE put out a statement about the possible government shutdown, it’s something that will heavily impact all workers even if most don’t understand how severe it can be. McCarthy, despite not wanting a shutdown, is willing to let it happen because he gave the small group of far right extremists far too much power in voting just to get elected in the first place, not because of that they can have him impeached at any point for any reason they please. And because he likes his power he won’t let it get to that point. It’s a horrendous reason to cause a government shutdown over but he will anyway because he’s scared of them. I hope the statement from IATSE and those like it have at least some sway and can change what seems like the inevitable outcome of a fully fledged shutdown.
It’s reassuring that IATSE is willing to stand not just with their members, but with other workers nationwide. A government shutdown would be another negative factor on our already struggling economy, and would affect countless workers' livelihoods. On the upside, Congress did push through a stop-gap proposal that would keep the government operating for now, however like President Loeb stated, the only opposition (other than 1 democrat voting no due to there being no support for Ukraine in the bill) was from republicans, and even then it was less than a majority of republicans. It’s crazy that there are people who care more about political posturing than actually representing and helping their constituents. Like, there is a sect of republicans (i.e. Matt Gaetz) that are mad that Speaker McCarthy was doing his job and supporting bipartisanship to avoid a government shutdown, I think it’s possible that these people forget what their actual jobs are.
