Rachel Bloom Mixes Musicals and Standup in 'Death, Let Me Do My Show'

Variety: Rachel Bloom remembers the exact moment that she decided her latest stage project, “Death, Let Me Do My Show,” couldn’t be the lightweight standup show she was hoping it would be. It was when she stood in front of a white board looking at an outline of the jokes she intended to tell, reading phrases like “pregnancy tests” and “my butthole is like the hurricane.”

I really relate to what Bloom says about performing her shows being a sort of therapy. I know this is true for myself, and I feel it may be true for many people working on a show. She says, “It’s not just yours anymore.” in regards to the events or trauma that she’s speaking about in the show. That’s how I feel when working on a show with a creative team. Every piece of theater is collaborative, and if the team is willing to fully work together and share the work, you end up sharing the art and therefore your emotions, which is a very cathartic experience. This must have been an especially difficult and healing show for Bloom, having lost her main collaborator (Adam Schlesinger) during the COVID-19 pandemic. It proves that everyone grieves differently. Her healing process happened to be writing and performing an entire show while figuring out how to collaborate with new people.
