Commentary: On David Mamet's new play, starring Shia LaBeouf

Los Angeles Times: David Mamet has recently unveiled a new play, “Henry Johnson,” at the Electric Lodge in Venice. Tickets have been so scarce for the production, which features Shia LaBeouf in a top-notch cast, that the September run was extended through Oct. 7. The reason you likely haven’t heard much about this offering is that this is one of Mamet’s clandestine world premieres.

I clicked on this originally because I really hate Shia LaBeouf. He has a history of abuse both in and out of the workplace. I thought Shia LaBeouf had been effectively shunned by the entertainment industry, but apparently not. This article was absolutely brutal towards David Mamet, and not without reason. He has an inexplicable hatred of, frankly, most people in the theatrical process, but specifically critics and directors. That mindset is probably harming his work’s success. Mamet does not invite critics, and then his plays get no publicity, meaning that many people don’t attend. At some point any publicity is good publicity. That’s probably what LaBeouf was thinking when he invited the critics. However, despite the author’s distaste for Mamet himself, he did commend the play and its “brilliant writing.” The review did a pretty poor job at telling me what this show is actually about other than “grooming”
