Long-Awaited ‘Moulin Rouge!’ Makes Its Pittsburgh Debut With a Dashing Duke and Splashy Spectable

onStage Pittsburgh: The North American tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical was delayed twice by COVID, once when we were all on hold during the pandemic, and again for the first wave of the Omicron variant. But if this show has proven one thing, you can’t keep a Tony Award-winning Broadway hit down.

I personally think seeing how shows adapt from bring a piece of cinema, to Broadway, then to a tour and finally to a regional theatre is so interesting. The source material gets to live so many lives and gets to be experienced in the same and different ways by so many groups of people which I think is really fastenating. The change here that I think is particular to this piece and works so well is the integration of my modern songs and their influences but still keeping some of the original pieces. It plays as an interest homage to the work in its past life. I also really enjoy seeing people that were the understudies on Broadway get to go on tour. I think they have such a deep understanding of the character but get to replay it in a new light which is always exciting as an audience member to see.

This article struck me because I have a ticket to go see the Pittsburgh stop of the Moulin Rouge show through the CMU group tickets. I am really excited to see the show because it represents a truly spectacular musical, which is something I am very interested in. Probably because of my love of seeing all of the cool toys, my favorite shows are the big-budget musicals which can have all of the special scenic, lighting, and effects. I am looking forward to seeing how they can transform the Benedum into a home for Moulin Rouge.
I think that national tours of Broadway shows are really amazing things. They open communities far away from New York to scales of productions that would be unobtainable for LORT theaters in the area. The scale of the touring industry is also a testament to the logistics and minds who put effort into turning a show that is designed for one specific theater into a show that can quickly be moved around the entire country.
