Leslie Odom Jr. Returns In The Show He’s Wanted To Do For Years

Observer: An unprecedented 16 Tony nominations got showered on Hamilton in 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop history lesson about early America’s foremost economist, Alexander Hamilton, who, back in the day when it was fashionable (1804), dueled to the death with Vice President Aaron Burr.

The anticipation of performing in a show one has yearned to be part of for years is a truly exhilarating prospect. Leslie Odom Jr., an esteemed alumnus of CMU, is set to embark on such a journey as he returns to Broadway. This news triggered a flood of memories during Tina's Stage Management Cue Lab, particularly when queuing the Satisfied sequence from Hamilton. It was a surreal moment to realize that, just like Leslie Odom Jr., the talented Renée Elise Goldsberry had once honed her craft within the very walls of this building. The convergence of past and present became palpable as we meticulously called cues to the Broadway cast recording, a realization that we, too, are contributing to the legacy of a space where luminaries once perfected their art. The shared connection with these accomplished artists adds an extra layer of significance to our work, creating a sense of continuity and pride. It's a testament to the enduring impact of our alma mater and a reminder that, like those who came before us, we are now playing our part in the rich tapestry of Broadway history.

We were actually talking about Purlie Victorious in my Foundation of Drama I class today. It premiered on this day in 1961. It would have been cool if the broadway run opened today (the 28th) instead of yesterday so that the revival would’ve opened on the same day as its predecessor. I love Leslie Odom Jr. and I would absolutely love to see him in Purlie Victorious (or meet him if he ever comes to CMU). It’s really awesome that he’s finally playing his dream role. I found it really heartwarming to read about Leslie Odom Jr. talking about his costars. He describes them all as geniuses and talks about how grateful he is to have the privilege to be working with them. That could fully be him just putting on an act for the reporter but I choose to think of him as genuinely humble. He is such an amazing actor as well and I really appreciate that instead of being a snob he chooses to acknowledge the talent he is surrounded by.
