I live about a 40 minute train ride from New York City so I am able to see many broadway shows and theater events for relatively inexpensive through lotteries, and have seen so many incredible theater pieces. I have not been to many special events though like the Broadway Flea Market, though I have always wanted to go. I think it would be so much fun to be surrounded by a bunch of theater loving people and see so much cool memorabilia and merchandise from running and old shows. I think it would also be such a fun and valuable experience to be able to meet so many people currently in the industry, and to meet people I’ve been a fan of for years. Unfortunately, I will not be able to go this year as it is during the school year, but hopefully in the next few years I may be able to attend.
I absolutely and completely adore things like these. These two types of special events are what make me feel a bit more comforted in that there is an actual community of people who work in this industry that care about each other and the larger community instead of just individuals getting lost in the miasma of contracts and auditions and opening dates. The Broadway Flea Market honestly reminds me a lot of the Comic book conventions that I used to go to as a kid. It felt like I was a part of something bigger and it made me excited to be around so many people who had similar interests to me and that people were making beautiful art based around the content that I loved. So the fact that Broadway hosts events like these is so impactful and important. Especially to the kids who feel alone, things like these make them feel like they are a part of something larger than themselves which is so incredibly important.
