Cal Shakes plans to finally produce its own Shakespeare again, in summer 2024
Datebook: California Shakespeare Theater plans to produce a show of its own in 2024, after operating exclusively as a rental house this year.
The production, “As You Like It,” directed by Elizabeth Carter, will mark the company’s 50th anniversary and run Sept. 12-29 at the Bruns Amphitheater in Orinda.

The waves of the pandemic continue to affect the arts in ways that I don’t think it affected other industries in I think both good and bad ways. For the good it made us reexamine that is important to us and how we treat other people. This resulted in higher wages and the decline of unpaid or basically unpaid internships. The negative, turned into a positive in this company’s case, is the other side of that coin. So many companies did not survive the pandemic leaving an exorbitant number of artists with no work and no outlet. Some left the industry, using their transferable skills, and other stayed and tried to weather the storm together. Cal Shakes is a remarkable company for being able to produce the comeback that they are in the middle of. Even though all of the changing leadership that they have endured in the past couple of years, they have made it to the top of the pack in a way and are getting to produce theatre again. I just wish other companies were as lucky.
