GLP rig helps fulfil 3D design concept for Zillion's Illuminati event
TPi: This brand new design, conceived by Frank Verstraeten, who co-promoted the event with Yves Smolders, ran over two days — each with nine hours duration. There was an abundance of GLP JDC1 and JDC Lines, some 85 JDC Line 500 and 40 JDC 1 hybrid strobes deployed.

The amount of light output that this fixture is capable of, especially as compared to its small size is truly incredible. I will always be in favor of technological advancements in theatrical lighting fixtures fitting more bang into a smaller package. I feel as though there are a ton of older fixtures that work fine but are so big and clunky that it is more of an inconvenience to have to lug them around while touring especially when space is so valuable on touring vans. Additionally smaller fixtures can typically be installed faster and overall more efficiently than the older, larger fixtures which cuts down on your load in time. This can both help keep down labor costs as the load in is less likely to have to go to time and a half and, hopefully, decrease the skill level required of the technician installing them. This rig is definitely going to make huge waves in the general event sphere but especially for concert lighting design as it is so effective and is very utilitarian.
It is interesting to me how advances in technology allow fixtures to do things that would have previously been impossible to do in a fixture of that form. In this article, it is notable that a strobe like the JDC1 can be used as a flood light. I think that advances in technology such as this, as well as generally being able to make brighter, more controllable light with less power is a great thing for the industry. I am really excited to see what companies like GLP Robe and ETC can come up with over the next several years which will advance what is possible in the way that we do lighting. Part of what I love about this field is that there is always a new effect that can be created or a new way of using a fixture to make a moment. I was also surprised that this show was using Chamsys because I generally think of big concerts and EDM shows using MA.
