'Rust' Director Recalls Armorer's Apology After He Was Shot

variety.com: Joel Souza, the writer and director of “Rust,” told a jury on Friday about getting shot while filming a scene in an old Western church with Alec Baldwin in October 2021. He said he heard a deafening bang, and that it “felt like somebody had taken a baseball bat to my shoulder.”

It’s surprising to hear another perspective on this Rust case. I can’t believe that Souza was not able to fathom that he was even shot by a real bullet. It’s unfortunate that Hutchkins was supposed to fill a hole in Souza’s Western film knowledge. I feel as though Souza should not have been able to walk away from a set that used prop weapons without knowing about “dummy” rounds or the labor-management safety bulletins. It is the job of the prop master or the film’s armorer to inform everyone on set of proper prop weapon usage. I do find it quite interesting to learn about the tension held between Zachary and Guiterrrez Reed, the props master and film’s armorer. It is weird that Zachary’s first reaction to the shooting was to unload thhe guns and throw the dummies away. I don’t think it means anything, but I think it seems to be weird practice for someone who is supposed to be a professional in the field.
