'Rust' Armorer Defense Attorney Re-Racks 'Sabotage' Theory in Court

www.thewrap.com: “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed repeatedly expressed shock that investigators found more live rounds of ammunition on the ill-fated Western set during a 2021 interrogation video shown in court Wednesday, at one point suggesting to detectives that someone may have placed them intentionally to “sabotage” her.

The shooting on the set of rust was a tragedy, and one that reflects really badly on the field of armory and using weapons in movies and TV shows. I think that Hollywood, after this horrible incident, will take a deep look at themselves and ask is a gun really justified in this specific setting? Is it something that we can do in post? Of course – live theatre has no "post" to edit with, but guns on stage are extremely rare, by nature of the audience being in the same room as the weapon. Clearly, several things need to change with how guns are handled in live environments. My question is how will this affect the production of rust, and how will events like this be handled in the future? The whole gun handling aspect seems really mismanaged to me, and only having two people mildly inspect the gun for ammunition seems insane.

I’m not honestly surprised they were acting strange. I would be too, regardless of if I was guilty or not in this scenario. A person is shot and killed on a movie set with a real gun that was supposed to be a prop. That is not something that just happens, people are to blame and even if I wasn’t guilty I’d still be absolutely terrified so absolutely I’d be acting strange still. The fact that everyone is trying to cover their ass all at once though is what makes this kind of thing go so slow because people don’t want to give too much information out of fear of something pointing towards themselves even wrongfully. It’s always also really sad how quickly people throw blame at each other in a hope to keep themselves safe from blame. Overall I really hope they figure out the real culprit soon so the family can have some closure.

This is kind of crazy. now first of all I know this is something that's really real, and is actually happening. from my condolences to the family of the person who was harmed on set. Having said all that, it kind of feels distant in a reality TV show way. I don't understand who would ever need live rounds of bullets on a theater set. In fact I don't understand anyone who would ever need a live round of bullets for anything. I love watching True Crime shows and podcasts, and figuring out the true mystery in certain cases. however this case just kind of sucks. I am not a fan of guns, and the fact that one fired off that was supposed to be a prop weapon is incredibly horrible. At CMU we treat problem weapons like real weapons. and I think that is incredibly impactful and a good standard to uphold. I hope this case gets figured out and everything gets handled accordingly.
