'Grand Theft Hamlet' Review: When Shakespeare and Gaming Collide
www.hollywoodreporter.com: Innovative, highly amusing and often touching, this collaborative project, competing in the documentary feature strand at SXSW, takes place entirely within the open game world of Grant Theft Auto Online. In this sprawling virtual space, temporarily out-of-work U.K.-based actors Sam Crane (who has played Harry Potter in the London production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and his friend Mark Oosterveen decide to mount a production of Hamlet, a first for both the theater and gaming worlds.

I think that this article did a great job of showing the great ability humans have to be creative and to use the resources given to them. Nobody would think of this particular production as a piece of classical work or in any way normal, but it shows a way in which motivated people had an idea and decided to make it happen. This may not be mainstream, and that is okay because it is not necessarily something that is trying to be for everybody, but something that is a way for people to explore their own creativity and understand themselves. I think there are a lot of situations where art can be something that you do because you have a good idea and are passionate about trying to figure out if that idea is practical, rather than because you think that other people will fall in love with it or it will have commercial success.
This was really fun to read about. Anyone who is in AREPT with me knows that I love Celine Song’s rendition of Checkov’s The Seagull on the Sims 4. I love video games and I love theater and I love the idea of using video games to do theater. GTA is a game where the whole point is to kill other people and steal their vehicle so it is really funny to me that they decided to make Hamlet in GTA. In this article they talk about hiring security within the game and having stage hands that are other players to help them make the play and “protect” the actors. I would really love to watch this documentary as it is about the making of Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto but it’s also about the impact of the pandemic on the emotional well being of people. It talks about how lonely people were and how that really hurt some of the makers of this documentary.
