onstagepittsburgh.com: On April 24, the Prime Stage Theatre Company will host its third annual High School Drama Awards at the New Hazlett Theater. This unique event recognizes excellence in High School fall plays produced across Western Pennsylvania. Prime Stage Theatre Drama Awards’ Director John Dolphin stated that the company’s goal with the awards this year and in coming years is to “create an event that all of the local High Schools will look forward to attending.”

My home town had a very similar idea as we had a local high school level. I personally do not like the idea of a high school level theater awards show. I know the intent of these awards shows it recognize the work these young technicians and actors put into these works of art. However, from my personal experience these awards shows just pit hormonal teenageres against eachother as they are already trying to figure out exactly what they want to do with their life. Teenageres are at a vulnerable point in their lives where they don't exactly know what they want to do with their life and they are constantly competing for the next role or opportunity they can acquire. These award shows can be negative when the contestants have a fully developed prefrontal cortex so I hope that the appreciation for this young talent stays but the format it is given changes.
