At Dallas Theater Center, Layoffs and Cutbacks and Cancellations

AMERICAN THEATRE: When the Dallas Theater Center opened Into the Woods earlier this month, the tension backstage could only be described as agonizing. Just days earlier, 37 staff members, including the entire acting company, were informed that they would be laid off following the company’s gala in mid-May.

This is so incredibly disappointing. It is one of my worst nightmares to have this happen, especially after having thought that I had found stability. It is especially disappointing coming out of this particular theater, knowing how professional they typically are and I do not quite know how they could have let their budget get so out of control. I do understand that there are certain things that you can not control but it would have been better to just cut out the extra things over time instead of cutting out the major things now. This does make me very worried for the future of theatre across the country though. While Dallas is not necessarily known as a cultural center of the nation, it is still an interesting reflection of what the cultural temperature is at the moment. I am terrified that I am getting a degree for a career that will not be around in any substantial way by the time I hit my thirties.
