'The Whale' wins Oscar for best makeup, hairstyling, causing backlash
www.usatoday.com: Brendan Fraser picked up his first Oscar for "The Whale" on Sunday night, capping an extraordinary return to Hollywood following the hardships he's faced in his career, including being sexually assaulted.
The film, where Fraser played a 600-pound online writing instructor, also won for best makeup and hairstyling.

A first-time Oscar win is exciting for everyone, especially when that actor/performer has a community following and supporting them. However, I do agree that the merits on which this Oscar was given give me a little pause. I did not watch The Whale nor know what it’s about, but the fact that they did turn and skinny actor into a 600-pound actor via prosthetics questions the moral standings of this movie. I wonder why the production and casting team didn’t cast an actor to better fit the role. I would understand this use of prosthetics better if the character in the movie had to go through a transformation, and they had to lose or gain a ton of weight in a short amount of time. In that scenario, it is for the benefit of the actor’s health and safety to use prosthetics to make that transition seem more realistic. But since there wasn’t a transition in the show, I wonder why the academy chose this movie specifically. The craft of using and making the prosthetics realistic is incredible and the artistry is wonderful, but I just wonder if there was a better way to recognize that artistry.
