Here Lies Love Has Taken All the Orchestra Seats Out of the Broadway Theatre

Playbill: The upcoming Broadway production of Here Lies Love is giving audiences an early look at the Broadway Theatre—which no longer has orchestra seats. Producer and guest star Tony and Olivier winner Lea Salonga and three-time Tony-nominated scenic designer David Korins stopped by the theatre to look at its current transformation into a dance club.

I am not sure of what to make of the scenic design of this show. I, personally, am generally a fan of David Korins’ designs and have followed him for years on instagram, but I have to say that I am wary of this design. I just can not visualize how it will work in the space despite the renderings that have been released for the show. I do think that the design is something that can grow on me once I see pictures of the actual finished set. And I also just do not want to say that I for sure do like it or that I for sure do not like it until I see photos of it completed in the space and I have listened to or read about the show because I feel like doing that would not be fair to it. Overall, I am excited to see the design actualized.

I have been seeing renderings and process images for Here Lies Love all over my Instagram feed, but I am still unsure what the final design will look like. I am excited to find out. I wonder if because there are four different ways to view the show, it will eliminate the idea of "nosebleed" seats and make a broadway theatre more equitable to all audience members. They claim it will be "more immersive than any show before" on Broadway, but that seems to be a low bar. I wonder if it will still be impressive or if viewers familiar with MeowWolf and PunchDrunk will be unimpressed. I also know that there are nightclubs in the Broadway area, and I would be curious to hear if they ever considered doing the show at one of them instead of changing the theatre for the show. In my head, they cost about the same, but I would be interested in seeing it priced out.
