5 Black Female Costume Designers Share Insight Into Their Work

Ebony: Costume designers are the heart of any film or television show. A character's clothing ties everything together and defines who they are. Take Issa Rae’s playful yet relatable clothing in the first few seasons of the HBO Max series Insecure. Her onscreen wardrobe helped define her character as broke, messy and lovable. The power suits Molly (Yvonne Orji) wore and the sensual looks she served while with her friends and suitors complimented her empowered attitude. A good costume designer helps shape the persona of a character and takes it to another level.

I think that it is impotent to highlight Costumer designers or any artist who are apart of the African American community because its not often enough that people know these names past those who win oscars like Ruth Carter. IF people only know predominately white designers they are missing the creators of some of everyones favorite films and other forms of entertainment. We can see that in this article that all of these women have similar roots to every one else in the field just working hard to climb the ranks from dresser, to styler, to buyer and then to assistant costume designer and finally Costume designer. I love his article highlights every ones process and the types of works that inspire them most. I love how all these women are aware of the influence they have and take this to help lift up small businesses. Whether or not people realize that these women are behind som of the most important designers they are and continue to inspire costume designers in the future
