Australian Theatre: the heat is on

It is inspiring to see theatres in other parts of the world recognize how unsustainable this industry is and how there are economic gains that we are not utilizing when we create theatre. Australia hopes to change the way they think about theatre so that they live more sustainably. Many of the companies are limited to smaller budgets so they tend to reduce and recycle which means that they spend their money mostly on labor, which contributes to better economic goals for the country. I wonder if America will ever take examples of what Australia is trying to accomplish and put it into practice on Broadway or maybe even other companies around the country. As this article argues, the sustainability of theatre and good practices of being sustainable does not have to reflect the outcome of the show at all. The shows produced will not be of lesser quality if we are sustainable, if anything they will be of the same quality as before just better for the environment. I hope in the years to come that American theatre looks to Australian theatre to learn how to use this industry to better our economy and environment.

This article, if anything, really brings to light the idea that we often do not get to hear about the other countries around us, and their theatre practices due to how big American theatre is in America, and also due to how centralized America is to itself and its constituents. I find it really refreshing to hear that Australia is beginning to try and once again highlight the arts within society, and are looking beyond the economic factors of the arts to try and bring a piece of Australian culture into the limelight. In general, it is good to see the prime minister wanting to actively highlight the culture of the people, and the arts is a great way to begin to highlight the cultural integrity of the Australian people as a whole, especially with how valued their theatrical arts are socially. The ideal is to begin to highlight the cultural values of the people in hopes of institutionalizing Australian values for years to come.
