How to Use a Multimeter or Voltmeter - The Most Common Tasks
www.protoolreviews.com: Testing voltage follows a simple process. For those of you new to electrical testing, we asked our resident Pro how they might teach an apprentice how to use a multimeter or voltmeter. Once you know how to use a multimeter, you can move on to troubleshooting and fixing electrical problems, verifying power at outlets, checking continuity, and more.

I know how to use a multimeter, but for some reason I still had a lot of fun reading this article. It’s crazy to me how advanced high-end multimeters are these days, like a TI84 for electricians. This article only covers voltage, amperage, continuity and resistance, and touches on temperature, but you can get meters now that measure frequency, capacitance, cycle, and more. It’s such an integral tool to have when working on equipment; if you know what you’re doing, you should know to test a busbar’s voltage to confirm the equipment is off before working on it! The part about measuring wall power safely made me kind of laugh. I’ve shocked myself a few times with 120 being careless, and I’ve also shorted capacitors with the probes of a meter before. Electricity is really such an interesting thing. Also, I used to have that exact analog multimeter pictured in the beginning of the article.
