With yet another movie-stage adaptation I am curious to see if Back to the Future is even capable of a translation to the stage. Over the summer in my hometown Karate Kid the musical previewed before heading to broadway. Though Karate Kid the Musical ended up being a smashing success I feel that such a fickle thing such as a screen to stage adaptation should not be where theater is heading. Between Mean Girls, Frozen, The Lion King and so many more the trend of turning movies into musicals has taken off over the years. I personally am frustrated by the lack of new stories in shows and the way many stories are being recycled through the years. I am looking forward to the futuristic and retro design decisions that can be made during this production. I think there is a lot of potential for the lighting and scenic design of this show.

To be quite honest, I found it a little funny that there’s a Back to The Future musical touring throughout the US. I believe it’s also on Broadway too. At first, I was like “Really? A musical about a movie?” But now, I realize how cool this could be for the industry. There are so many people who grew up watching these movies. I know I did, and the movies came out years and years before I was even born. It’s musicals like these that draw people to the theatre if they’ve never been before. And given the fact that it’s touring and not just staying in New York City, it can reach so many new people too. I would be very interested in seeing this show, and even bringing my dad to see it too. It’s hard seeing that movies are being made into musicals when we could be creating new and original work, but also, it’s fun to play with stuff that already brings people so much joy and happiness.
