“Steel Magnolias” at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre
The Pittsburgh Tatler: “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion” confesses salon owner Truvy (Robyne Parrish) toward the end of Robert Harling’s play Steel Magnolias. That could also well be the motto of the Pittsburgh Public Theatre production, which keeps the laughs coming even as the plot tugs at the heartstrings.

As someone who stage managed Steel Magnolias mid pandemic back in 2021 that show is near and dear to me as it was one of the first shows with good disability representation in Shelby T1 Diabetes.I am excited to see this simple heartwarming production make its way to Pittsburg. Though I will not have the chance to see this show due to my workload, I am excited to see the city's response to this heartwarming classic. Though no show is perfect I feel that Steel Magnolias has aged well over the decades and continues to teach a heartwarming story about sisterhood grief and familial love. Though this show is theoretically simple to design with only one set and 4 sets of costumes the designs from the photos in the article look incredible. Also the simple complexity of having to do hair onstage was a challenge I know my production team had to accomplish and I am curious how this production archives that effect.
