JLC Online: Blueprints are the complete set of drawings that show what a designer wants a building to look like. These drawings are made to an exact “scale” (a ratio of size; the length of a line on the drawing equals a proportional length on the building) and include dimensions, as well as plenty of detail on material choices and installation directions.

I find that teaching someone how to read construction or technical drawings can be quite difficult. There are so many symbols and icons that individuals can use, and one has to have a general understanding of what components make up a “thing.” It can be extremely difficult to take a 3D real world object that one is used to working with, and then see its construction details on paper. For example, if somebody is used to constructing platforms in the shop and that is their introduction to carpentry, trying to read a construction drawing of that same platform could easily be difficult to comprehend if that person has never tried to read a drawing before. That phrase in itself is confusing, “read a drawing,” but we say it all the time. I find sections especially hard to explain at times, I feel as though this article did a good job.
