Play Date: A Day of Jigging with Seattle Irish Dance Company

The Stranger: As it turns out, the world of Irish dance is more complicated than just Macklemore waving an Irish flag in a trench coat. I learned this lesson as I tried to jig, tap, and step alongside the Seattle Irish Dance Company (SIDC) during the “two weeks of Irish-dancing craziness” ahead of St. Patrick’s Day, as SIDC founder Carlye Cunniff put it.

Irish dance seems like the type of choreography that is often underrated within dance communities. I have always assumed that Irish dance is quite similar to tap dancing, but after reading this article it seems more intense and harder because your upper body never moves, just your feet. Two of my friends back home grew up competitively Irish dancing, and I got to watch one of their performances and I was in awe. Mesmerized by their feet and then surprised by the costumes and traditions that came along with the performance. Irish dance is so fun to experience and watch, probably just as much fun as it is to perform. I hope that in the future there will be more St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with Irish dancing. When this author talks about how challenging it was to just jump right into the routine with the other dancers I was inspired by their bravery to put themselves in the dance as well, even if it was only rehearsal. I enjoy Irish dance and I hope to see more performances of it in the future.
