I think that this is incredibly smart and will lead to a very interesting and extremely big change in theatre as an industry. While there are most certainly male YA Fiction readers and writers, the industry is absolutely dominated by women. There has long been a trend of making fun of media marketed towards women like Chick flicks, romance movies/ novels, and YA Fiction like the Hunger Games, The Notebook, Clueless. While they are made fun of to no end by certain types of men and “pick me girls” but all of the above are absolute cultural juggernauts that have altered pop culture and multiple different industries through the last 30 years. This effect was always going to end up being large in theatre. For example, even in the last few years there have been a few hit musicals that have been primarily propelled forward by female majority audiences such as “Be More Chill” “Dear Evan Hansen” and even Hamilton.
