Pride Committee Statement on International Transgender Day of Visibility

IATSE: Today marks the annual Transgender Day of Visibility, which occurs every year on March 31st. It’s a day that aims to celebrate members of the trans community and focuses on positive visibility to help combat bias. Yet it’s hard to be positive when we witness the current wave of anti-trans hate that is sweeping across the world.

This statement holds a lot of good information, and I really hope it’s being seen by the people who need to see it. Especially within IATSE and other major organizations of entertainment workers, there is no room for transphobia. If we have any hope of making a difference outside our own community, we as a community need to be united in support of trans people. What many cisgender queer people don’t realize is that it doesn’t just stop at trans hate. Once they’re done passing bills against trans people, they’re gonna go after the rest of the community if we let them have their way. It’s more important than ever to be educated and vocal about trans history. Those who came before us paved the way for queer rights to be where they are right now and we have to keep pushing forward. Going backward is truly not an option.

To celebrate Trans Day of Visibility in the United States is a painful stab in the back to any trans person that knows anything about the current state of any red/slightly red state’s legislation as of the last few months. There has been legislation introduced going against the human rights of trans people in well over half the states thus far; and there are not many states that have rejected this legislation at this point. I am very fortunate to be a Pennsylvanian citizen, and be able to receive gender-affirming care here, as we are one of the few states that are yet to actively try and take rights away from trans people, and it is really painful to see all of the people in other states heavily affected by the cruel acts of prejudice people with too much free time on their hands to think about the lives of everybody besides themselves. There are not enough people doing anything to fight for the rights of our people, and I fear how far they will take this, and how many people will get hurt because of it.
