‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Director Says Oscars Should Recognize Stunts
IndieWire: “John Wick: Chapter 4” director Chad Stahelski is taking aim at the Academy Awards.
Stahelski, who helms the critically acclaimed “John Wick” franchise, addressed the debate of stunt work being included in Oscar categories by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. In fact, Stahelski argued that the Academy has never even “considered” recognizing stunts.

This is such a good thing to bring up. You’d think with the success of superhero films, especially now, that stunts would be recognized more. The other interesting thing that’s brought up is what counts and who wins if a ‘Best Stunt’ category is introduced? There’s a lot of different types of stunts that feel relatively incomparable. I think of all the Mythbusters-esque stuff - car crashes, explosions, etc. Then there’s the human stunts - the falls, etc. The discussion about who should win was interesting - I mean, nothing says that multiple people can’t win an Oscar for a stunt. But how many is too many? Another interesting thing that came to mind was the fact that Tom Cruise does literally all of his stunts. Let’s say Tom Cruise does something insane and amazing. Does Tom Cruise get nominated? Does the coordinator? It’s definitely complicated, but I think if a standard is set that makes sense people will agree and settle on it. As he says, it’s just nice to be recognized, which means that there may not be intense fuss about who takes the statue.
