Actors' Equity May Strike Over Broadway Touring Contract

Playbill: Actors' Equity Association, representing professional actors and stage managers, has authorized its Executive Director Al Vincent, Jr. to call a strike of all Broadway national tours following an impasse in negotiations with The Broadway League, representing producers and theatre owners. If the strike happens, touring productions will come to a halt.

A goal of mine is to join a touring group at some point in my career, so it is concerning to hear that under the Broadway Touring contracts, stage managers get paid less than their counterparts on Broadway. To have to work while you are sick, and pay out of pocket for housing and food, when a contract guarantees your health and safety is very upsetting. We all know that actors and stage managers are stretched thin to begin with, especially on tours, and so to have them have to negotiate for basic working health and safety conditions is upsetting. The negotiations will resume on April 11 and 12 and I hope that this issue is resolved and the actors and stage managers get the pay and benefits they deserve from these touring contracts. I hope that a strike doesn’t happen because then the touring industry will be out of business for a while, however maybe that is the shock that the Broadway Touring Company needs in order to change their ways.
