I cannot tell you how excited I am for the Tonys this year. It feels to me like this is the first year Broadway is BACK. We were in a dark age. Now we’re back. This is a COMPETITIVE season, which is another reason why the spirit feels different. Lead Actor in a Musical is going to be a nail-biter and I could not be more excited. Is J. Harrison Ghee going to take it for their groundbreaking performance or is Josh Groban gonna take it for absolutely murdering Sweeney Todd (pun intended)? Josh was transcendent. And I would be shocked if Annaleigh didn’t win as well - she was absolutely phenomenal. Annaleigh doesn’t have a Tony for a musical (only one for You Can’t Take It With You in 2014), and she is such a household name that I believe she should take this one. But then - there’s Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond. Micaela came in hot after Cher and is unbelievable - she’s young, so we’ll see if it goes to her. Adrianna Hicks is also in this category - I feel like this is a Newsies situation, where she may have had a better chance of winning had she been in Featured Actress. The question of the season for me: is Ben Platt going to beat Josh Groban, despite already having a Tony, or is J. Harrison going to take away that competition completely and steal it? Not to mention the Best Revival category is going to be the award of the night.
