Yumiko Nagashima
Your Interviews | Women in Lighting: My name is Yumiko Nagashima. I am a lighting designer at the studio, CHIPS LLC. I've been pursuing what I got interested in, and I think that made me who I am.
I belonged to the theater club when I was in high school. The lighting changed how the stage looked in the theater, and I like that. At around the same time, I was interested in display design too.

This was a great interview with Yumiko Nagashima. I like how she explained her path to lighting design as not direct. I think it's really important to understand during university that what you're majoring in now does not ultimately determine what career you will have in the future. For Nagashima, she started out as an interior designer, and then a landscape designer, before coming to lighting design. The principals of design stand in any field, and if you have an eye for design, you can learn the trade of whatever are you want to be in. I find it really interesting how she found ways to merge lighting design and landscape design, which is something I never really thought of as an option, but it seems cool now.
