Oscars Diversity: Historic Wins Leap Over Low Bar Set By Hollywood

www.forbes.com: Like every single other awards ceremony in the past year, the 93rd annual Academy Awards looked a little different — but thank goodness it didn’t take place entirely on Zoom. We may have reached a point in the pandemic when virtual acceptance speeches have become awkward or challenged by a bad wifi connection. Nonetheless, like every ceremony since 2016’s great #OscarsSoWhite movement launched by April Reign, one of the main buzzwords of the night was diversity.

I watched the Oscars with my roommates on Sunday night, and I don’t know how many times I yelled in excitement about how many Black individuals were present. As a Black woman myself, I never used to watch the Oscars at all because of the lack of diversity of the people nominated. However, this year, I was excited to see the awards. On top of the great number of Black people, Chloe Zhao being the first woman of color to win the award for Best Director was a great moment in history to be able to witness. At the same time, however, it’s crazy that it has taken this long to see a woman of color win such a great award. It’s crazy that there have only been two women to win the award at all. I believe that it’s great to celebrate these huge wins for BIPOC individuals, but it’s also important to continue to hold the academy accountable. There is still much more work to do in terms of diversity in Hollywood.

I think that this article did a really good job at showing the great diversity of the winners this year. I think the biggest problems were the best actress and best actor categories. They really gave the awards to two old white people who already have oscars. It would be one thing if people were rooting for the two winners, but in my opinion i was rooting for Viola Davis and Cadwick Boseman from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. And I think everyone else was definitely expecting Chadwick boseman to win the award. Other than those two categories I thought the winners were all very deserving and made great breakthroughs for diversity in Hollywood. I thought the best screenplay oscar who went to the writer of Promising Young Woman was also very promising because hopeful the female director/ writer will continue to produce films.
