Some Cause For Hope

sleepdogs: It’s been a tough year for anyone working in the performing arts, and I want to pick apart something I’m hearing more and more, especially as theatres announce their re-opening programmes and projects. In private I’m hearing an increasing number of brilliant artists – and in particular writers – saying that theatre isn’t a welcoming place for them any longer, and they’re seriously thinking of moving on.

This article is beautifully wriiten and I definitely resonate with alot of what they are saying. When artists are pushed to make money by higher ups, the art feels transactional, which is not the feeling you want to have as an artist who didnt go into this for the money. The writer acknowledges that "There are easier ways to make profit, without the messy business of creating art that makes you think about things and feel stuff." This pandemic has made a ñot of people question why they are doing what they are doing. Instead of wanting things to go "back to normal", they are asking themselves "whats next?".
