Showtime picks local diner as backdrop for new series filming in Pittsburgh

WPXI: Hollywood was in town this week. Showtime is filming a series, and they picked local diner, Don’s Diner, to be part of it. “It is amazing how they transform it. The size of this place doesn’t matter. When you see it on TV it looks 10 times bigger. I love it!” said Marcie Kemmler, owner of Don’s Diner.

Before moving to Pittsburgh, I honestly had no idea how many films and television shows are filmed here in Pittsburgh. I had watched one movie that was set on the campus of Carnegie Mellon, but other than that I really had no idea. Just since moving here in August I have heard of many films and television shows being made here and I think it is a potentially great opportunity for the local business community that benefits from this. It seems that maybe this is a more recent development, to have Pittsburgh as a big place to film in, but I think it could potentially be a great thing. In this specific instance, it is great for Don’s Diner, with the filming to help support their small business during the pandemic. I definitely am now going to be looking out for shows and movies that have been filmed in Pittsburgh, and maybe I will be able to recognize some places now.

I love the commotion Pittsburgh is having for their local diner to be a filming location for a primetime TV show. Growing up in Los Angeles itself, this isn’t too out of the ordinary to me to be nearby film shoots. In fact, my high school in El Segundo is the classic background for Disney Channel TV shows and at least once a semester there would be filming happening on the campus. The other day I was driving a friend of mine home and they were filming something for Killing Eve right across the street and she was enamoured. Honestly though, it is great for local business for something to be shot at a local dive. I love Pittsburgh and all that is has to offer me (especially the Squirrel Hill area) so it's nice for local business to be brought up like this!
