Learning New Skills
SoundGirls.org: So I learnt a new skill. Or rather, I improved a skill I haven’t used since university. I learnt it from a man called John and he was, in my opinion, the best tutor we had. He had a PhD and taught us about the avant-garde world of music and presented us with new ideas. “Will a tree make a sound if it falls in the forest if no one is there to hear it?” and other fundamentals of sound and sonic art.

Firstly I really liked how anecdotal this article was. I thought the point of view narrative served what the writer wanted to get across very well. One of the many ways that gender affects your experience as a professional is that it can lead to learning fewer skills than your coworkers do. This is not to say that all professional men are sexist because they don’t teach women the same material, but rather how small and probably unnoticeable patterns can affect women in the long run. Much like the soldering example, I can think of many more that apply to different areas of technical theater. As a very basic example that whole “I need some strong boys to carry xxx for me” when we were children. The girls present probably never got the hang of how to carry things effectively or how much they could carry at the time. It sounds simple, but when you think about it in matters of basic use of tools, how to gain respect from others, or how to solder it adds up.
