2021 Oscars, Academy Awards, Set Design
www.townandcountrymag.com: As with all pandemic-era events, the 93rd Academy Awards are going to look a little different than usual. At the helm as production designer, David Rockwell is doing his best to ensure the night is full of cinematic magic. It's a role reprisal for the award-winning architect and set designer, who also did the Oscars' sets in 2009 and 2010.

It was very interesting seeing how the Oscars were set up this year. It was obviously a very different setting than the classic Dolby Theatre event but learning some of the context on the history of the Oscars from this article has made me appreciate the overall design of this year’s Academy Awards much more. I never really thought all that much about the history of the Oscars ceremony, but I learned from this article that in its humble beginnings, it was meant to be an event for nominees only – allot them to have a space with each other and celebrate each other in a small, personal awards ceremony. I don’t know when the shift happened, but the ceremonies I have grown up seeing are a much bigger event – with a live audience. Honestly, I kind of like the idea of a smaller event much more. I don’t even know what specifically it is about it, it just feels… right to me. I have my qualms with the outcomes of the individual awards, but the overall design of the space was wonderfully executed, and this article gave a closer look at the outdoor areas, which did not get nearly as much screen time. The outdoor setting contrasted nicely with the more formal interior.
I found this article very interesting. I fairly enjoyed the oscars this year but I was a little underwhelmed by the set design. There was something about those two really large widows that had the sun setting that really threw it off for me. Like all award shows are in a theatre or concert hall and so there is no sunlight, but then it was sort of this weird cocktail lounge. I though once the sun went down it was much better. I did like how the set was more comfortable this year and down to earth. Everyone was a lot closer to the stage and it felt like we were getting a peek into this little conference instead of the presentational format its usually in. however the runway this year was almost up to par so this made some people like, Zendaya and Carey Mulligan stand out in the homely setting.
