Inside Glenn Close’s Magnificent Costume Collection

Vanity Fair: Stalwart actor and eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close took a trip down memory lane during Vanity Fair’s Cocktail Hour, Live! event Wednesday, explaining the stories behind some of the most indelible costumes she’s worn onscreen. Accompanied by her longtime legendary costume designer Ann Roth and her costumer James Nadeaux, Close shared her favorite looks from her more than 800-piece collection, which she donated to Indiana University’s Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design in 2017.

Although Glenn Close has no need to keep track of her costumes as she is an actress, this is a good reminder as designers to always keep a copy of all their work. Be it sketches, fabric swatches, the muslin, drafts, anything that can prove that you were the person creating this product or helping this product be created. Close mentioned how she has no object relating back to one of the pieces she wore, she had not yet started her collection. For designers, this could backfire poorly, as portfolios are a big part of our jobs. More so, they serve as a window to our past selves. We can see the progress we made from that particular point in time; perhaps even go back and look to examine what worked, what did not work, and what can be improved. Keeping tossed-out ideas is also great because perhaps you can use that in future projects.

I thought this article was very interesting. I have seen many interviews about Glenn Close’s collection of all her film costumes. I think its pretty remarkable that she was able to keep so many of them and it's great that she donated them to the collection at Indiana University. I also really enjoyed hearing the snippets from the two costume designers. I think the reason those costumes are so iconic is because of the work of the designer along with Glenn’s abilities. This wasn't mentioned in the article but actually in the 2017 revival of Sunset Boulevard, Glenn used her costumes from the original production from the 90s which were also designed by Anthony Powell. They were short on budget and she had kept all of them so it was very useful. I hope that the exhibition travels somewhere close because that would be really cool to see. Especially all of her costumes from 101 Dalmations.
