When the entertainment industry went dark, ATOMIC told a new story

Keystone Edge - What's Next & Best in Pennsylvania - Growth, Innovation, and Community News: Lititz, PA’s ATOMIC has designed and built sets for some of the world’s most-watched events, including The Academy Awards, WrestleMania, and the iHeart Music Awards. Founded in 1994 with just three employees, the company now has 60 people on staff. One of the company’s recent projects was especially high profile: They worked on the set for the Super Bowl LV Halftime Show in Tampa Bay. ATOMIC crafted the city skyline, which contained the socially distanced back-up singers for headline performer The Weeknd.

I remember early in the pandemic last year hearing rumors that Atomic, being one of the smaller companies in the Rock Lititz cohort, was close to going under, so I am glad to hear that they were able to pivot and continue to design and build things. Having done the company bios project in TD3 last semester, it does seem to be that commercial shops have been able to pivot to building things for construction or for pandemic safety. However, the Spacekit is a sort of different product than what I have seen. It is a piece of art and a technically interesting product. I love the idea that the pieces can be rearranged and swapped out. I also think that the mounting mechanism is cool – the dove joint esqe pieces are clever, and adding a level into the “hook” part of the product is super convenient. Plus, it looks like the product is made with zero waste, sustainable materials – upcycled rice husks! Ten out of ten.
