Dallas Opera debuts new Netflix-like subscription streaming service

CultureMap Dallas: Like most arts organizations, The Dallas Opera has been forced to rethink how it produces and presents works to audiences amid the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 26, it took a new step to bridge the gap between traditional concert hall and at-home entertainment with the launch of thedallasopera.TV, a new subscription streaming platform.

Things like this, where companies are figuring out new ways to deliver their art rather than fighting and complaining about the pandemic, begging for emergency funding, makes me very happy and excited for them. In this world, the people who learn to adapt and change with the environment are the one's who will survive and keep thriving. The streaming service is a great idea for the Dallas Opera to continue their art, but I am a bit worried for their audience range. Though I do not know anything about opera, making their own streaming service rather than adding their recorded operas to a more widespread streaming service is questionable. Only those who are invested in opera would invest in the streaming service, and I am afraid that their audience range will significantly diminish. I wonder if by making their own streaming service, they will profit more from their content and that is why they chose to do so. Especially with their low price of 4.99 a month, I suppose they will have many people doing one month subscriptions to pay $5 to watch one opera they are interested in.
