Celebrate August Wilson With a Look Back at His Work On Broadway

Playbill: Regarded as one of America’s greatest playwrights, Wilson made his Broadway debut in 1984 with Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, beginning a three-decade career on the Main Stem. That play is part of Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle, a series of plays chronicling the African-American experience in each decade of the 20th century. During the course of his career, he earned nine Tony Award nominations, winning Best Play for 1987 for Fences. Additionally, he earned a Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for Fences and then again in 1990 for The Piano Lesson.

This article was so cool! It was so great to see all the photos of the productions from August Wilson’s plays over the years. I think his concept of having 10 plays in the same place but separated over time is so unique and was done very well. I have read some of his plays and watched filmed versions of productions but I would like to read all of them at sometime and also see a production live. We studied The Piano Lesson in Foundations of Drama I this semester. There were references in the play to characters in his other plays which I find make his stories much more rich and complex. I also liked seeing all of the playbills and how they changed from year to year. It seems like um until the 2000s there was a pretty consistent style. Also it was cool to see all of the photos of Viola Davis, she has made appearances in many of his productions.
