Playbill: In the week following a report from The Hollywood Reporter that shed light on several allegations of abuse and intimidation by Broadway and film producer Scott Rudin, a collective of three performers’ unions—Actors’ Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, and the American Federation of Musicians Local 802—have released a statement denouncing harassment and toxic workplaces in the industry.

It’s great to see these unions use their collective power to call out this type of harassment and call out corporate board of directors for allowing this to happen. When I initially read the headline, I was a bit cynical because you see these public statements from companies that say, “we don’t condone this and this isn’t who we are,” while allowing the behavior to continue behind closed doors. However, coming from unions, I feel a bit different. They are limited to what they can do to exert control over theater companies. Obviously, if it was an actor, these performer unions could blacklist them, but other than placing any theater that works with Rudin on a do not work list, there isn’t much they can do other than publicly denounce him. I don’t know if Broadway producers are in PGA, but if they are or have their union, I expect it to remove him from their membership.
