The Winners of the ASTC-USITT Challenge 2021 are…
ASTC: A team from the University of Virginia was awarded the top prize in the 2021 ASTC-USITT Venue Renovation Challenge competition on April 9th, 2021. The ASTC Edgar L. Lustig Award of $2,000 was presented to the University of Virginia team during a live YouTube video broadcast for their proposed renovation of the McIntire Amphitheater on the UVA campus. The theoretical project transformed a limited use outdoor amphitheater into a venue that can support a large variety of performing arts events along with additional functional support spaces.

Even though I did not get a chance to attend this year’s USITT, I am glad that it went well, even holding various types of competitions as usual. I went to USITT once a few years ago but did not watch the competition, so I do not know how they were hold originally, but I somehow, after watching a portion of their presentation on YouTube, think that being remote actually facilitated the presenters by letting them present about broader ranges of features with more convenient way. I wonder how next year’s USITT would look like, and to be honest, I am expecting there to be the options for people to attend remotely as they did this year. Content wise, too, I hope there could be more teams sharing what they did with the remote performances so that it becomes one of the genre, not a one-time thing that evolved during the era of COVID.
