Setting the Stage Once Again for Shakespeare, and Live Theater
The New York Times: Shakespeare is coming back, and I can’t be the only person who has missed him.
There are signs of renewed activity at Shakespeare’s Globe, and talk of at least one star-studded production that is, after many delays, scheduled to be performed — can you believe it? — live. This comes after a year of a pandemic that has affected in various ways what has, and hasn’t, been staged, with Shakespeare a particular casualty.

God. Can’t we let Shakespeare roll over and die? Why is Shakespeare at the forefront of theatre to come back? I would love for the industry to take advantage of the new elusiveness of the theatre and to now take advantage and churn out good works. You’d think that producers would now see that they have a limited amount of slots and put their eggs into some fun new works. Geez. I think that I just have developed a new aversion to Shakespeare. And it’s so overdone! And can only be done so many times in so many different ways. I do like Twelfth Night though. I think that this past year has revealed a lot about my tastes and how they’ve changed during the pandemic. I’ve been liking theatre less and less and Shakespeare has been a sad product of that.
