IATSE Improves Working Benefits for Broadcast Technicians in South Florida

www.sportsvideo.org: More than 150 broadcast technicians employed by Program Productions in South Florida will receive annual raises, health and retirement contributions, and enjoy improved working conditions under a new contract negotiated by the IATSE and those workers. Their work can regularly be viewed on Bally Sports Sun and other sports broadcast outlets throughout the region and the country.

I am glad the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees is now deciding to cover broadcast engineers. I had never really imagined that someone who freelanced broadcasting for something such as sports games on television would be covered by, or even need, a union but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I would not think to place them under IATSE considering its title either but I guess if they need to go somewhere, it may as well be one of the bigger unions to join. Being born and raised in South Florida, it pleases me that these workers in my home area are getting what they deserve, and it gives me hope that if this were to happen somewhere else as well, they would be aided too. Getting an occupation is difficult in times like this, so having the added safety net of wage increases and other supplemental benefits is crucial.

I’m so happy that the international alliance of the actual stage employees is taking the initiative to give more workers rights to the technicians employed by program productions in South Florida. This is a big win for workers rights everywhere and for all the actual unions. As we have become more dependent on broadcasting all of our forms of entertainment, we have found out how important broadcast engineers are to this art form. It is so important for these workers to receive annual raises health benefits and improved working conditions and I’m so happy that they were able to negotiate this contract with their employers in the union. This provides an amazing example of what can be accomplished when a union and employer work together to give the workers their biggest voice possible. Especially with the instability of jobs right now, these fundamental safety nets are really appreciated by the workers.
