Broadway Reopened. For 36 Minutes. It’s a Start.

The Seattle Times: Three hundred and eighty-seven days after Broadway went dark, a faint light started to glimmer Saturday. There were just two performers — one at a time — on a bare Broadway stage. But together they conjured up decades of theater lore, invoking the songs and shows and stars that once filled the grand houses in and around Times Square.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH this was a wonderful article. I loved how many people they interviewed. While there are still tens of thousands of artists out of work , this is the first glimmer of hope that live theaters can open back up with limited capacity seating and proof of a negative covid test. Especially for Broadway, because New York's economy relies heavily on tourism brought in by Theaters. They have shows set to open in the fall which is promising. The owner of the theater said “It’s the first step home — the first of many,” he said. “This is not, ‘Broadway’s back!’ This is, ‘Broadway is coming back!’ And we know it can because of this.”

This article was so sweet and hopeful! It's always good to see little steps back to normalcy in such a weird time. Every time I get even a little bit of feeling like things are going back to normal, it just makes me so happy. Vaccines seem to be going well, so I'm really hoping that theaters are able to open up their doors soon. It's so cute how everyone they interviewed felt so genuinely excited by this. It shows how much they really love what they do and want to get back to it, which isn't common for peoples' careers. Live theater is so invigorating, and I'm sure for anyone in the theater industry to be watching this, it felt like watching a play again for the first time. Even going into the Chosky for the first time last semester was so healing, so when I enter a Broadway theater for the first time when theaters open again, it will be an unforgettable experience.

I loved reading this! Hope is what we all need right about now– just some mention of “things will get better, we will be able to move forward”. Even if only for 36 minutes, Broadway was open again. Not doors-flung-open-for-everyone open but more like doors-cracked-slightly-to-allow-a-glimer-of-light-onto-stage. I think this just gives us some optimism. I know it will be a while longer before I can see a live show again. But, I already know it will be an emotional experience. It will take some getting used to being in the same room as strangers again, returning to a new normal, but I look forward to that day. A lot has changed in our world in the last year, and I think that whatever new normal we return to will be different than the past "normal". “Broadway is coming back” is wonderful to hear, and I cannot wait to see theaters open in full swing again. That day will come! Let’s all get vaccinated first, though.

I think this is super exciting news!! Theatre finally opening even at the smallest capacity is great and it is at least creating a few more jobs within the industry. I also think restrictions add a sense of creativity where now with the newer format short shows can be put on and not having the pressure of 2 hour shows right as we come off of a full year not doing any theatre. I think it is going to take us a little bit to get back into the swing of things so if broadway and the rest of the theater world open up in stages then we will be setting ourselves up for a little more success. However I think job hunting will be tricky with so many people wanting and needing to work, having an insane amount of competitions for the few shows that are allowed to open at lower capacity. I think this competition will be prevalent for many years after this pandemic too, with people wanting to work more as well as missing working for an entire year. I also think the industry will have less opportunities for a bit as the industry still needs to circulate more money.
