How San Francisco prepared this actor for a career in arts and activism
Datebook: Kristina Wong has many fond memories of growing up in San Francisco’s Sunset District, but middle school is nowhere near those lovely recollections.
As a young teen in the early ’90s, once her school day ended, she trudged up the massive 14th Street hill to her house, the peak of her walk offering picturesque views from the Golden Gate Bridge to Sutro Tower.

Home is where the heart is. This statement must continue to ring true for this activist and artist Kristina Wong. With her heart, she has led so many into conversations about racism, activism, and theatre, and through her work, she tells stories to remind others of kindness to oneself and others. I remember reading about her Pulitzer Prize in drama, but I’m now just finding out the piece of work she won it for. I am going to look for the script so I can read it because it’s very interesting to me. I also didn’t know that this play premiered off-Broadway and was based on her own life. It’s incredible the work she has been able to accomplish and how during the pandemic she inspired her community to create masks for the greater good. I hope we continue to hear about the work Kristina Wong is doing because she is continuing to make change even after winning the Pulitzer Prize. I was touched by this article because of how she talks about how her home in San Francisco shaped her into the person she is today, and that she will always be from San Francisco no matter where she lives
I think working in the arts is unique in a way that it allows you to fully use your personal life story to impact communities and make change. I think that growing up in certain situations and experiencing different things really prepare you well for a strong and impactful career. I cannot fully relate to her story but I can relate to growing up and learning theater in an environment that was not fully developed in a way that I had to teach myself a lot of skills and do a lot of exploration on my own in order to succeed. I think that is something that was difficult in the time but has really prepared me well for coming to CMU. I think it gave me a really good experience that I often find myself pulling from when I am in difficult situations. I thought this article was really heart warming and impactful and I can only imagine how proud she felt going home.
