Tonys Best Musical: Closed shows nominated for first time since 2013?

GoldDerby: According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, two closed shows are expected to receive nominations for Best Musical at this year’s Tony Awards. They are “Days of Wine and Roses,” which is in fifth place with 19/2 odds, and “Here Lies Love,” which is in second with 5/1 odds. Traditionally, however, closed shows tend to struggle getting Best Musical noms.

It was wonderful to get a glimpse into what the voting process is for the Tony awards. Well, we as a society have looked into various issues with award shows, but it is clear that the Tony Awards have had some thought put in to ensure all the shows nominated have a fair shot. Regardless of commercial success. However, knowing that the success of a show commercially can be effective by Tony nominations or wins, I do wonder what the different voting factors are. If, for example, Hadestown, and Kimberly Akimbo were both up for best musical, I wonder if Kimberly Akimbo would win. Because if it is a good enough show that it really is a tough decision between Hades town, and Kimberly Akimbo, maybe Kimberly Akimbo gets the nomination in order to help ticket sales a little bit, since Hades town is already more of a commercial success. That kind of thing is what I wonder.
