This article gives a little more information on what happened in the accident on the set of The Pickup. I understand the importance of not disclosing what happened until investigations have been conducted, but sometimes that just causes rumors and speculation into what actually happened. I’m glad that both OSHA and IATSE are looking into what happened, since if it was something that was preventable (i.e. negligence) we’ll at least hear some of what has happened, there might also be fines. If it was truly an accident and the car seized up due to no fault of anyone, I’ll be curious to see how something like that is handled. You can’t prepare for every possibility, but OSHA and IATSE might require procedures on what to do if something like this happens again in the future. I hope the crew members that were injured heal soon, and that all of their medical bills are being taken care of by the studio.

Accidents like this are always tragic. And everyone always looks to see if it could have been avoided. The way this article lays it out, the impression I get is that all safety measures were being taken, at least to the best of their ability, but that malfunctions happen, and in this case one did, leading to the accident. I am very glad that the first piece of information in the article was the statement that while they are gathering facts, their first priority are with the recovery of their crew. Because the people are what make the art. You have to take care of your people first and foremost. However, I will be interested to see what facts come about while they are looking at the incident further. It’s always sad to hear about an accident while filming. While it’s not uncommon for accidents to happen in the entertainment business, because film has so many tools at its disposal due to its medium, you hear about these accidents, less often, and they are taken very seriously.
