What Real Dancers Think of Balletcore

Dance Magazine: Whether you like it, loathe it, or roll your eyes at it, you can’t miss it: Ballet-inspired clothing for the nondancing consumer is everywhere. The fashion and ballet worlds have a long and storied relationship, but ballet-aesthetic streetwear’s recent resurgence in popularity has been striking. According to fashion insiders, “balletcore” is already a defining trend of 2024.

When I first read the title of the article I thought it was a little funny. ballet core -What even is that? after I processed it I totally know about acres, I see it all the time especially in New York. that model off duty look with a little more Elegance I would describe it as. what do I think of ballet core? well personally and aesthetically I do quite like it, however it is a bit annoying I have to admit. it's almost dress up, non-valerinas putting on bows tutus in ballet flats. is a mockery? no, I think any form of copying is flattery people simply like the look of a ballerina, someone who symbolizes Beauty and elegance. I think anyone who says they wear ballet core is a little cringe, however who am I to say that. I have been told I've been cringe in the past. it's all about what makes people comfortable, if someone feels their best in ballet core they should wear it, they should never claim that they do ballet just because they wear the clothes, that would be a total blow to bet all ballerinas out there. the effort and time it takes to be a ballerina should not be something represented in solely clothes.

I think that all of these style “aesthetics” and titles are so silly and fun. In a way, the popularization of these different fashion styles and trends has helped people to find their own personal style and clothing niche. Some of them are kind of funny and a bit weird, but if that is what people like to wear, then so be it. I think when done right, this “balletcore” look can be rather stunning, and not at all offensive to dancers. I think that it's rather strange for dancers to be upset with people “appropriating” their clothing. Ballet has never been negatively viewed by society and ballerinas have never been marginalized. It is not the same as other forms of dance being appropriated because there actually is a history of dancers not being able to wear their own clothing. This, to my knowledge, has not occurred to ballet. Therefore, it really should not be that big of a deal that people want to look like pretty ballerinas, especially since it is done all in good fun. I also think that most of the clothing items people are wearing are altered forms of dancer clothing that fit more of people’s daily clothing needs.
